One of the essential parts of creativity is thinking and doing things differently. And I’ve found an amazing example of just that to share with you today. This is Monday Muse.

Hello I’m Creativity Coach Wade Kingsley. My aim is to help you unlock your problem solving potential, so you can create the life you really want.

I believe everyone is creative, but maybe you just need a little inspo to go. Monday Muse is the Breakfast of Creative Champions and in this episode I’m in the USA. I’ve found something really interesting that — depending on where in the world you’re listening to this — you may not have heard of before.

Let me introduce you to a baseball team. Not just any sort of Baseball team — this is the Savannah Bananas.

The Bananas have deliberately decided to do baseball differently. They do it for fun. They change rules, they dance on the field, and… they are legitimate baseball players.

Here’s the story of the Savannah Bananas — as told by their founder — Jesse Cole.

These guys are amazing — and the fans line up for miles to get tickets. The games are sold out months in advance — and it’s a really successful example of creativity.

Professional Baseball itself started in the 1870’s and all it’s really done since is become, well more professional.

What’s amazing about this story is no one had really thought to do this before. Jesse and his team deliberately did the opposite. They took things that were supposed traditions and ripped up the rule book. The game of baseball still gets played, but it’s incidental to what the real game is — entertaining people.

So, here’s your exercise today.

Do something differently. That’s it. Do something the opposite of how it’s quote unquote supposed to be. Now I’ll let you choose what it is, but I want you to deliberately find something that is always done a certain way — it could be a process at work — or maybe it’s something you do at home — but the idea is to proactively challenge how it’s meant to be done.

Then examine what happened as a result. Did you notice a change? Even a small one. Then try it again with something else, and something else and something else. We can’t expect to get different ideas if we always do things the same way.

That’s it for today. I’m going to watch a Savannah Bananas game so join me next week for another workout. You can follow us on the socials — or sign up to get Monday Muse in your inbox at monday muse dot co — and even email me with any feedback, comments or topic suggestions: wade@mondaymuse.co

And say it with me — I am creative.
